How It Started

In a few days, maybe next week, I’ll post something on the First Friday devotion relative to the anti-abortion fight. But first, I just want to take a moment to explain where the idea came from.

About 18 months ago, a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. She went through a long process of chemo-therapy, and was pronounced cancer-free last year. Last December she went back for a follow-up visit that included a full body MRI. The MRI found two regions of cancer, one in the chest, one on the liver. The spread of this cancer was a huge shock. A biopsy was scheduled for mid-January.

On the First Friday in January I went to Mass early. I had decided to fast that day for my friends’ recovery and wanted to spend some time in Eucharistic adoration before Mass began.

The MRI didn’t leave much doubt to the oncologist, but he wanted to make sure what he was dealing with via the biopsy. The biopsy was performed and everyone hunkered down to wait for the results.

Finally, the doctor called and said that there was no cancer. He said there may have been an error on the original MRI. He ordered a couple of more tests to prove it, but that there didn’t appear to be anything to worry about. The further tests confirmed that the cancer was gone.

I don’t know if it was my fast that helped with this or not; there were lots of other people offering up prayers. I hope, at the very least, that it helped. But it occurred to me that it was worth a shot to apply fasting, prayer and Eucharistic adoration to the curse of abortion. It seemed logical to start a large-scale effort here, since this is where the court case was originally argued.

Anyone that want’s to join the fight just let me know.

I first read about this at Happy Catholic last month and commented to Julie that I'll be joining you from here in CT. Thanks for posting how it all started and for the prayers. Judy M.
